Hank Hubbard was the original "Weather God" -- his "Weather In Motion" made it easy for Dick Mayers and me to sub for Hank, whenever he was indisposed. My memories of Channel 4 are terrific -- Doc Hamilton let us fool around on-air and keep NBC the number one net in Tucson! (Of course, having Johnny Carson and the Tonight Show" follow my 10PM new didn't hurt at all...)
I find it interesting that, from what it appears, not even the master control operators at KVOA are watching the local news.. Latest example: a live remote from the Ina/Oracle intersection. Screen goes black in mid-report..it takes a minute or so to toss back to the studio for a "well get back to that in a bit" line. And they didn't even do that, instead coming back on in the middle of another story.
The local stations need to focus on fixing the product on their actual main channel feed, before bothering with finding uses for the extra capacity.
The constant hand gestures Paul Cicala uses are bordering on obnoxious. You'd almost think he's an Italian.
Paul Cicala is a good reporter but he is so full of himself. It's almost bordering on obnoxious....
Yes, seven year ago was the number Cuyler said on-air last week.
Wasn't Cuyler with KGUN previously?
I had the good fortune of working with Cuyler at KMSB... the guy is a total pro, great on the air and one of the nicest people I've ever met, as well as a terrific father and husband. Good hire KGUN!
Glad to Cuyler Diggs back on air. Good for him!
When does Mark begin at ITB? I've noticed no new press releases have been posted on the Hot Off the Press (Release) blog in more than a week. Is he already gone from there?
@fraser007 Nah. Not a fan of DK. It's my opinion that DK was not well liked internally when I was there several years ago. Not sure how it is now, but it's my opinion that it hasn't changed much, especially after the layoffs. I'm sure BJP and some other ex-Star folks floating around here will agree with me.
But to say the comments weren't full of trolls? How else do you classify people who said to "send all the Mexicans home?" Or that Barak Obama was the anti-christ? You really think those comments and others like them "reflected what Tucson actually thought?" Those comments came from a handful of trolls who are too afraid to post something under their real name. The only place where it's really hurt is the sports blogs--Bruce's blog in particular had a lot of great discussions in the past.
x journo: Seems to me that having visitors spend a lot of time on your website would be a good thing, and exactly what advertisers would want. I found reading the comments on the Star's website much more interesting than the articles themselves. Now, I hardly even look at the website.
"The comments have been great".are you nuts or just an ax Az Daily Star who is in love with Debbie Kornmiller? I am not a troll. The older comments were very funny and reflected what Tucson actually thought. There were not that many cool aide drinkers.
Guess you call hundreds of comments for some important stories "trolls".
lol @ fraiser007. Ever since they switched, the comments have been great. All the trolls are gone. I would have loved to see some of the trolls post their comments under their real names.
When I worked there, we'd occasionally laugh at some of the commenters who'd stay up until blabbering until 4am, only to start commenting again at 7a and be on the site all day.
Let me see.. Major Water District GM announces "retirement" under interesting circumstances to revolve back to the County to work with Chuckleberry again. Which County Crony will be installed in the vacant position?
Let me see.. "Evans replaces Dave Hatfield, who has taken a position in communications with Pima County government." Will he become a dispatcher for PCSO? Will Hatfield be just another of the ex-print persons in the already over-sized PR department? If current trends continue, Chuckleberry's PR flacks will outnumber the staff of every other County department, in short order.
Thank God he didn't go with the Arizona Daily Star! their new comment policy is only allowing "Facebook" members to comment. The comments have gone down from a few dozen or even into the hundreds (for exciting stories) to nothing or a handful for any particular story. Thanks for cutting off the debate Debbie Kornmiller!
I use the Sunday Star for the bottom of my bird cage.
Good luck Mark Evans!!
"...he can allow and champion dissemination of the content that readers are being denied by the other media outlets in Tucson."
If Mr. Evans is interested in "finding out what the readers of Inside Tucson Business want", he can allow and champion dissemination of the content that readers are being denied by the other media outlets in Tucson. Telling the story, the whole story, and the ones the others are afraid to touch will undoubtedly bring the readers your way. Thank you, and we look forward to the changes to come at Inside Tucson Business.
Would love to hear John in Oehler's slot!!!
I talked to a friend of mine at 1490 yesterday.
He told me you are going to interview for oehler's slot.
Good Luck hope you get the gig.
We need your voice in tucson.
John is it time to push the PANIC BUTTON
