Re: “Noshing Around

It looks like the La Salsa on the SW corner of Campbell and Fort Lowell is shuttered.

Couldn't agree more, Scarpia B. I did some serious binge shopping there right after it opened and it's all been great, even the "Sandwich Sprinkle," which is not something I would typically buy. Man, I was skeptical, too, but was sooooo wrong.

Re: “Noshing Around

Penzey's is a god-send. They have the most complete collection of spices anyone could think of, good quality and better prices. For the neophytes out there, when I started to buy Penzeys spices, I thought the blends were a way to increase margin on a commodity product. Was I wrong. the blends are the best thing in the store, the Arizona Blend is the absolute best SW spice you will ever use.

Re: “Noshing Around

We have had to buy our Penzey's spices when making the trek to Scottsdale. It is so wonderful that they are in Tucson.

Re: “Noshing Around

I'm looking forward to a trip to the Penzeys store- their vindaloo blend turns ordinary chicken/potatoes/onion into something really special. I've been ordering spices from them for years.

Oops! The Rhino Pub was at 1118 E. Sixth St. Thanks for pointing that out; we'll get it fixed.

Re: “Noshing Around

Just discovered Penzeys spices this weekend. Woot.

Does Congress Street extend east as far as 1118? That's around Mountain Avenue.

Looking forward to the Three and a Half Brothers Cafe. Always interested in finding breakfast places that make pancakes other than buttermilk. We go to Good Egg 3x a week while we're there in the winter to get whole-grain cakes.

Re: “Noshing Around

Why no more detailed coverage of the Iron Chef competition? What was the secret ingredient? What did both chefs prepare? What were the judges scores? No pictures? I am disappointed - I would have expected some pics, coverage, even video in the Range or on Journal Broadcast Group's Iron Chef site.

Re: “Noshing Around

We stopped by Frosty Jake's today, after driving quite a distance cross town. They are open- but they are not open.

The man explained, We are a nighttime stand. Only open 5-9 pm. Told us to come back then.

The hours are confusing to us- middle of a hot day in Tucson is a great time for a cold treat.

But, no custard for us. Bummer.

Re: “Noshing Around

I went there while it was open last week; arrived at the drive up to find the sign not visible; went to the window and waited about five minutes until finally a woman came to open it and take my order. She shared with me that they "don't have their stuff together yet" then took at least another five minutes to produce a four ounce vanilla custard. She took my money, came back to the window with my change with a mouth full of food and stated things would be better on my return visit. There won't be one......

There's a new frozen custard place opening "soon" at the old Hamburger Stand on Grant near Country Club.

It's anchored in the online chow section in the box labeled "Regarding Food Truck Diaries." Enjoy!

Vito's makes great food. The pizza was very tasty. True New York style. Best I had in Tucson. The Italian Sandwich was really good, enough for two people. Made with delicious Boars Head meat on a Viro's italian roll with italian dressing...the perfect italian.
