Govinda's Natural Foods has been serving vegetarian meals in Tucson since 1992! The food Govinda's offers is wholesome, healthy, organic, and blessed. The restaurant has a spotless appearance with touches of charming and unique thoughtfulness such as mood lighting, exotic decorations from foreign lands, spiritual literature, a boutique, an outside dining area with a water fountain, a bird aviary, and Koi pond. All of these aesthetics add to the serene and peaceful atmosphere.
Both lunch and dinner are served in an all you can eat Buffet style. Many of the fresh vegetables served in the salad bar are not only organic but are also purchased from local growers. The salad dressings are all homemade and offer a variety of healthy flavors and tastes. The hot side of the buffet contains both brown and white rice, two yummy hot soups, fresh steamed vegetables, spiced just right cooked veggies, and an entree for dinner. In addition, homemade bread and sweet deserts are baked fresh daily. Also, there are always dairy and glutton free selections on the menu for those with in tolerances, and all day Thursday is vegan day!
I eat at Govinda's everyday except for Monday when the restaurant is closed. Stepping onto the property, instantaneously my mind relaxes. Once I make my way into the restaurant area, the meditative music permeating the atmosphere calms my body, and the aromas from the fresh food arouses my senses. I delicately fill my plate with my chosen selections of delicious food cooked with love and devotion and sit down at a table to eat quietly. Literally, every bite taken equals pure bliss, as I smile and chew thoroughly so as to enjoy the savory tastes! Dining at Govinda's Natural Foods brings my body, mind, and spirit peace.
Wonderful breakfasts, great dinners, best vege restaurant in Tucson. The patio is cozy but a bit noisy.
I've been eating this food for years and I love it. There are simply no reasons to have animals killed to gratify a whim for good eats.
Lovin Spoonfuls is perfect for vegans and non-vegans alike. Vegans can eat comfortably knowing everything on the menu does not contain animal products. Non-Vegans can learn the huge amount of delicious options for dinner other than meat. The atmosphere is very warm and inviting. Peggy, the owner, is almost always there and is very nice. She has always asked how was my dinner.
I normally start out with the Tempura Shrimp, which with one bite makes you forget you are eating fake shrimp. Next they bring my dinner salad, with one of the wonderful homemade Italian, Ranch, Thousand Island, Sesame Dijon or Balsamic Vinaigrette dressings.
It is hard to pick an entrée to describe since I have ate most dishes on the menu. Luckily, you can never go wrong with the special of the day. I have had everything from Beef Burgundy to Fettuccine Alfredo. Most dishes have good portions. However, I always leave room for desert. They make the best Banana Nut Muffins. The only negative review I have for this restaurant is they do not have all their bakery options on a daily basis.
I am guessing the previous comment was making a comment about the different style of restaurant when it comes to ordering your food. You order at the counter and the servers bring you out food to your table. You also have to get your drink refills yourself. I really did not mind this part of the restaurant. They promptly brought the food to your table.
When I came back from my deployments from overseas this restaurant was the first place I ate dinner. This restaurant is one of the places I take visitors to Tucson.
The best DIY restaurant in town. I am a vegetarian and truly love the freshness of ingredients and the wide variety of items to put in your salad. I do not have a favorite here, as I can order on a whim.
When you walk in the door, there's a card/menu - somewhat like a sushi menu. You check off the items you would like in your salad - the types of greens, veggies, if you want cheese, nuts, proteins and the type of dressing you would like. They offer various options in dressings - including some low-fat.
The price is right and the atmosphere is sunny. My daughter and I enjoy lunch there often.
Yummy food, informal setting, loving vibe, and fantastic cheesecake. Hare Krishna!
The food is awesome, tasty, and big variety. Salad bar is so fresh and lots of organic items to choose from. All of that for around $10. Atmosphere is A+ too.
Previously I failed to mention the wonderful service. Both friendly and professional, the service staff struck that perfect balance between the feeling of being stalked on one hand to the sensation of being neglected and abandoned on the other. Nicely done!
Hello Nate1980, While your intent may be good, you apparently either have too much free time, or you're a frustrated writer. By the way, you do write well. In any case, one or two-liner comments are usually adequate to express one's take on a restaurant experience. For example. Bottom Line: Every time we come to restaurant X the service is awful, but we like the food. Unless one is an exceptional and unbiased writer, multiply paragraph rates have virtually no place here, in my meaningless view.
Expensive, over-rated serve yourself restaurant.
Oh.. and was not impressed with the names of many of the items in a vegetarian restaurant being called after meat dishes.
I recently came back to Tucson after being gone for 9 years. When I saw the mention in the Best Of Tucson issue, I thought I would try one of my old favorites. Well, it's a shadow of what it once was. The food was pretty good but the home-baked bread is gone replaced by regular store-bought bread, and the once-yummy desserts now come from Costco.....really?? The worst part was when I witnessed someone come out from the kitchen and yell at the server who apparently had the audacity to be in the bathroom when we came in! I used to be a server so I pay attention to these things. She still gave us nice service and was very friendly but, based on all of the above I will not be back. The 1 star is because my omelet was ok.
Someone please tell confused Indigo Star that Govinda's is not "glutton free" as she states. Gluttons are not excluded from Govindas.

OK. food was reasonably tasty. I had Homemade Adzuki Burger Savory grilled patty of adzuki beans, zucchini, mushrooms, carrots, corn, organic oats and walnuts with lettuce, tomato and vegan mayo on an organic whole wheat bun. Tasted OK but was somewhat oily and I thought expensive at $7.50 for what I had. The wife had Rice and Bean Burrito, with the gluten free toast instead of the whole-wheat flour tortilla. stuffed with organic brown rice & black beans, vegan sour cream, and an organic tossed salad with your choice of one of our five house dressings. for $7.95 The substituted GF toast was 2 quite small triangles which certainly did not compensate in size for a tortilla. When we asked for more toast we were informed that it would be 0.90 more.. We asked to speak to the manager who informed us that they made it them self and was very expensive! We were not impressed with his attitude or the price for a small slice of toast. All in all was tasty enough but expensive for vegetarian food.
The moral of all posts concerning Tucson area restaurants is to give people information about area restaurants. Retired Couple, I would recommend a more detail view of the restaurant. How many times have you eat there, what were the specific dishes you did not like? Which items did you like?
Jamesbcat, what do you exactly mean she was unconcerned with your unhappiness with your order? Did you specifically say you did not like the dish and want some form of compensation? What did you want to alleviate your concerns? Your general statement does specifically describe your experience on the restaurant.
CaliMan, it would be nice to know your exact entree to give readers a idea to order.
I am not trying to harshly critique other people's responses. I just would like when people critique a restaurant they are more specific and descriptive about their experience. I am betting owners of restaurants like to look at these critiques to try to improve their patrons dining experience. First time patrons would like a more descriptive review another than a couple sentences.
The first time I went my food was good, had a veggie burger. Good but no big deal. The next time I came I had one of their dinners and it as bland and crappy. What's the moral of this post? The place is hit and miss depending on what you order.
While some of the menu items are rather good, others are not so good tasting. Worst, the owner seems unconcerned if you are unhappy with your order. She offers no concessions. Because of this, we won't be coming back.
We went here for the first time, Oct 30th, and really enjoyed our meals. They have a great menu selection and the prices are fairly reasonable. Staff was pleasant also. While we didn't have desert, the cakes looked very good. We will certainly be back!
Awesome breakfasts and dinners are very good as well, best vege restaurant in town.
After several trips to our favorite Cup Cafe downtown we decided to try something new for breakfast. Right off the bat we were impressed by the cleanliness of the converted house. The breakfast menu interesting and I ended up having the British breakfast which consisted of sauteed spinach onions and mushrooms topped over english muffin with mornay sauce topped with two eggs. Very good. This place is know for it's vegetarian dishes but does have bacon, ham and sausages with some of their entrees. Highly recommended.
