Unique menu, fantastic patio, great bar with live jazz on Saturdays and Sundays, excellent beer selection, caring staff... unique to Tucson - a must try!
This is a great place to hear very good jazz. The performers are students and you will be stunned to find out how young they are when you hear their music. They are very polished and really know how to swing. The performances are in the outdoor patio by the pool which contains a fire pit. It's a great way to spend an evening.
J-Bar is one of the standards that out-of-town visitors to my business are taken. It's a Tucson original. The food is consistently good and inventive. I'm not sure what another reviewer is talking about, regarding spiciness. Yes, many plates are spicier than the average member of the retirement set might like, but that's honestly why we go there. One gets tired of the bland food that the snowbirds have caused restaurants to serve. But also, there are plenty of dishes that are not hot. They might be spicy, but that's not the same as hot.
For the record, though, the jalapeno chocolate ice cream is reason enough to go there.
This was our first time in Hifalutin. My husband and I went on recommendations from some of our friends. We went on a Thursday night and the place was packed. There was a 20 minute wait. We were surprised that they took reservations. We will know for next time. There was some room at the bar so we decided to have a drink. We were quickly greeted by the bartender. She said that they had the best margaritas. So we gave them a shot. They were refreshing, delicious and packed a punch. No lemonade flavored margaritas here. We sat about 15 minutes later at a small table in the patio warmed with heaters. Glad we were sat outside because the noise level inside was a bit too loud for our likes. We started with the cheese crisp, half beef and half chicken on the servers recommendation. It was a good one. The server also dropped off some delectable little muffins. My husband ordered a filet med-rare and I opted for the tomato basil pasta. His steak was cooked to perfection and was very tender. My tomato basil pasta was flavorful and the perfect size. I would highly recommend this to everyone. Comfortable atmosphere, friendly and knowledgeable staff and fair prices. We can't wait to return.
This place is a must! Exceptional food, great value, wonderful atmosphere and the staff does and excellant job!
Truely a fabulous experience.
Let me start where I am coming from. When HiFalutin first opened my wife and I went and had the most horrible experience: slow, bad service, cold food, sending it back twice, and horrible wait times, in a very noisy crowded atmosphere. Even talking to the owner about the issues seem to elicit a "Meh!" attitude. So bad we walked out after 2 hours and not paying.
Fast forward maybe 8 years and for some reason my wife got spammed on their email list. Communications ensued and we were offered a gift card in an effort to try them again. OK, so we thought as they were still around after 8+ years they must have some sort of following.
We decided to go there 5:30pm Monday, the 22nd of August with friends and it was like night and day. We had a couple of happy hour $3 appetisers and then I had the $17 top sirloin steak with the wife lashing out on the $25 filet, both were cooked exactly as we asked them to be and were very tasty. The sides were good and hot, as hot food should be. Our friends both had enjoyable chicken dishes.
The service was somewhat inattentive but absolutely nothing like the abysmal service just after opening.
Would we recommend them now? Certainly and I'll stop bitching to friends about how bad they were 8 years ago :-)
How do you review a place that hasnt opened?
In April, The last time I was at Janos J-Bar and I do mean the last, there were no entrees or appetizers on the menu that were not laden with blazing hot chili peppers. I asked the waitress if she noticed this and she said she did and so did many diners and they complained. I asked her why Janos put peppers in everything and she replied, "He has just gone crazy with peppers." I asked if he grew them and that made them profitable to use instead of herbs and spices and she chuckled. She said the only solution she knew was to order a plain vegetarian plate and request no peppers as the other items already had hot pepper in the dishes including the crusts and batters. The plain veggie plate was twenty something dollars she thought. I politely told her I can steam veggies at home and I gave her back the menus and we left. Don't dine at J-Bar unless you really like food so hot with pepper it will burn your mouth.
Worst steak I have ever had in a restaurant. Supposedly prime meat? You can do better at Costco. Don't know where they get their meat. At least they took the 36$ price off the tab. Service was actually good. Decor is a bit gauche, especially for Tucson, which isn't impressed by ostentation.
This is a placeholder, for stories that we've run already. Not that complicated.
The Flying V is in a super great location, with fantastic views and a very cool interior, with a top-flite outside patio...But...the food is very hotel-like, mostly inconsistant, and a bit over-priced. Remember who their clientele is here; out-of-town snowbirds, convention people, & those who are on a corporate expense account. If an outside restauranteur ran the Flying V, it would be so much better. Someone like Janos Wilder, Albert Hall, or even the Fox Restaurant Group, or the Zona 78 guys.
The Flying V is directly across the parking lot from Lowes's Ventana Canyon resort, and that says it all...it is just another hotel restauarant with one of the most premier locations in our valley. I say go for a margarita, and maybe the guacamole & chips (made to order at table-side), and skip the expensive dinner deal.
