Go See Allo Darlin' Tomorrow or Live a Lifetime of Regret

Posted By on Thu, May 3, 2012 at 3:00 PM

I briefly mentioned tomorrow's Allo Darlin' show at Club Congress tomorrow night back in February, but now that their new album Europe is out and the show is just around the corner, this post serves as your warning that if you think you might skip this free show, you should prepare yourself for the constant dull ache of an opportunity lost.

The most important thing to know is that Elizabeth Morris, the frontwoman for Allo Darlin', is a great songwriter, writing the sort of wistful indie pop that used to fill mixtapes passed along by sensitive types who couldn't find the actual words for their longing. There are these sort of bands for every generation, it seems, whether it was the Go-Betweens (who are referenced in "Tallulah," above), the twee acts of the 90's like Heavenly or Lois, or Belle & Sebastian in more recent years. This sort of thing is admittedly right up my alley, so maybe I'm an easy mark, but Europe is one of my favorite albums in a long time, equally about the breakup of a relationship, but also just as much about connecting with music. It's heartbreakingly beautiful throughout, charming but also sharp and clever. Take a listen to the album today and check them out tomorrow. The show is free and on a Friday night, what do you have to lose?
