Democrat Ron Barber Picks Up More Republican Support In CD8 Special Election To Finish Giffords' Term

Democrat Ron Barber, who is seeking to complete Gabrielle Giffords’ term in Congressional District 8, is picking up more Republican support.

Barber, who had served as Giffords’ district director since she took office in 2007 and was shot twice in the same shooting rampage that left Giffords critically injured, had already won the support of Tucson City Councilman Steve Kozachik and former Tucson mayor Bob Walkup.

Today, Barber is releasing GOP endorsements from Sahaurita Vice-Mayor Lynne Skelton, former Sierra Vista mayor Bob Strain and Cochise County rancher and veterinarian Gary Thrasher, who are crossing party lines to support Barber in the June 12 special election to finish Giffords’ term.

Skelton says that Barber understands the issues facing the district and “brings experience to the picture. He understands what’s going to work and how to bring jobs to our area. And more than anything else, he’s not a politician. … Ron is a true public servant. He’s solving problems and building consensus and he wants to get stuff done.”

The Congressional District 8 office has been “very, very responsive” to Sahuarita’s needs, even in Giffords’ absence, according to Skelton.

“You never got turned away,” Skelton says. “You pick up the phone and you could talk with someone in Congresswoman Giffords’ office. … If there’s a problem or a concern, we could most definitely get results from her office.”

Bob Strain, the former Republican mayor of Sierra Vista, says the electing Barber will ensure continuity for the remainder of the term.

He says the Congressional District 8 office has been responsive to Sierra Vista’s concerns about supporting Fort Huachuca, protecting the local water supply and providing constituent service.

“In my opinion, Ron Barber is the only person who can offer the continuity of service through this bookstrap election we’ve got coming up,” Strain says.

Barber will face the winner of a special GOP primary on April 17 that includes unsuccessful 2010 candidate Jesse Kelly, state Sen. Frank Antenori, sports broadcaster and businessman Dave Sitton, former Air Force combat pilot Martha McSally and Army vet John Lervold.

Jesse Kelly, after losing to Gabby in the 2010 election, rather than stay in Arizona and try to make a difference, in a huff moved to Texas. He only returned once Gabby stepped down. If you really want to see what kind of "person" Jesse Kelly is all you have to do is to look at this taken directly from his website several days AFTER Gabby was shot at the Safeway http://j.mp/A5to9a

Ok, so he likes guns, big deal...and BTW, if the link was taken from his website AFTER Gabby was shot, then why are the dates listed from June 2010 when we know she was shot Jan. 8th of 2011? What relevance does it hold to list a campaign event that pre-dates the shooting? Whoever you are, RRowley, you seriously need to get a grip on reality...

RJFletcher; I think you need to reread what Rowley wrote. I think Rowley is saying that Kelly kept it up even several days after that tragedy. It doesn't matter what the dates are. He saw what happened to Giffords and he kept it up on his website. That's disgusting. Rowley isn't saying he said those things after Giffords got shot. Rowley is saying he said those things previously and kept it up after someone took those words literally (not saying that idiot took Kelly's words or even knew him, but what Kelly told people to do actually happened almost word for word).

Kelly is that same Sarah Palin problem that Giffords tried to call attention to before she was shot. She said there were problems with certain ways of "firing people up" and discussed how Palin put a crosshair over her district. If you can't see why someone like Kelly, after what he had on his website, should not benefit from someone gunning down a politician then it is you who needs a grip on reality. It is you who needs to realize that everything shouldn't be about political parties and beliefs all the time.

Thanks John, That's exactly what I was saying. Kelly left that up for days AFTER the shooting. He was in town and there is NO way he did not remember putting the posting up and NO way he did not know the shooting happened.

It should be investigated as to wether or not Jared Laughner attended one of J kelly's shooting events...

Who mentioned political parties or beliefs, John? And please explain how Mr. Kelly benefited, under any stretch of the imagination, from a nut who gunned down his former political opponent-if anything, it seems to have made his own positions untenable.

Finally, simply because a politician seeks common cause with fellow supporters of the second amendment, whether through shooting with them or placing crosshairs on a disputed district, it does not follow that they are asking, or even suggesting, their supporters to shoot their opponents. Inferring otherwise is precisely the sort of toxic politics you supposedly decry. Don't make the sheriff's mistake of knee-jerk assumption of motive-the blowback only makes you look more foolish.

Gabby is a Glock handgun owner, Kelly who knows. This web link is basically a concoction of 3 different clippings cobbled together. Their juxtaposition is an invention of the poster, nothing more. Owning guns is not illegal, hunting is not illegal, and nor is eating meat.
