What to Listen to This Week: Friday Edition

Posted By on Fri, Dec 9, 2011 at 4:00 PM

In this installment of our music recommendation series, our music writers suggest songs by the Ghost Wolves, Colin Stetson, Kathleen Edwards and the Dirtbombs.

Carl Hanni
The Ghost Wolves, "Snake & Jake Shake"

This rude duo hail from Austin. The video totally speaks for itself and doesn't need any help from me.

Curtis McCrary
Colin Stetson, "Judges"

Seen here on CBC's "Q", Colin Stetson performs "Judges" from his 2011 album "New History Warfare - Judges, Vol. 2." As they note in the info on the YouTube entry, he's miked in several places besides the end of his bass sax, including a dog collar mike around his throat. It's an unusual kind of virtuosity — the one instrument one-man-band — and Stetson gets an incredible variety of sounds and textures from his body and one instrument.

Eric Swedlund
Kathleen Edwards, "Change the Sheets"

Another one of my most anticipated new albums for 2012 is Voyageur from Kathleen Edwards. It's been a long four years since the Canadian singer-songwriter released the excellent Asking For Flowers and in the meantime she's found a famous boyfriend in Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, who co-produced this new record. Change the Sheets signals at least a slight departure for Edwards, with a more dynamic, fuller sound, and I'm excited to hear the full album.

Casey Dewey
The Dirtbombs, "Shari Vari"

Detroit garage rockers pay a little homage to their hometown by covering Detroit techno legend Carl Craig. "Shari Vari" is a pulsating little number, all sleek and sexy, perfect for fans of both genres. Play this at your next living room dance party.
