A new cookbook, Eat Mesquite!, from the nonprofit, volunteer-run group Desert Harvesters has just been published. It features more than 150 mesquite-based recipes celebrating desert life. The book is available locally for $20.
The group Desert Harvesters realized people were craving a cookbook when at an event in 2009, they served hundreds of people more than 1,500 mesquite pancakes.
The cookbook is organized into five categories: Breakfasts; Savory Dishes and Sides; Breads and Crackers; Spreads, Sauces and Syrups; and Sweets and Drinks. The recipes also incorporate other complementary native foods, like prickly pears. Helpful notes on harvesting, milling and cooking with the plants are also included in the book.
Eat Mesquite! is available in Tucson at Antigone Books, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum’s Mountain House Gift Shop, farmers' market booths of Jeau Allen/Skeleton Creek and Martha Ames Burgess/Flor de Mayo, Native Seeds/SEARCH, Originate Natural Building Showroom, Revolutionary Grounds Books and Coffee, Tohono Chul Park, and Tucson Audubon Nature Shop.
The book can also be ordered online, where 100 percent of the profits go to funding for Desert Harvesters' community efforts.
