A Free Song From New Dead Western Plains

Posted By on Thu, Nov 18, 2010 at 3:25 PM

Friday night, Fort Lowell Records celebrates the release of their fourth 7-inch vinyl single this year at Plush, this time featuring local band Dead Western Plains. It's really easy to like what Fort Lowell is doing, releasing great music in interesting packaging, pricing it fairly (only $5 for a handnumbered limited edition single) and promoting it relentlessly.

To that end, James Tritten, the head of the label, was nice enough to let us provide the A side of the single, "Alta", for download here on The Range.

Stephen Seigel described the song in his Soundbites column saying:

The A-side, "Alta," is a shape-shifting 5 1/2 minutes that begins with an Animal Collective-like tangle of harmonies and whistling (or is that a theremin?) before it all recedes to the background in favor of a jaunty vocal melody that carries the song throughout a series of pleasant interruptions—a complimentary countermelody here, a well-placed breakdown there, before concluding: "Sometimes we fail / If the heavens won't hold you tight / the ground surely will." Cue the lovely, nearly two-minute outro.

While digital music is nice, the actual record will be on sale at Plush, and like the other three Fort Lowell releases so far, you'll feel cooler just having the vinyl in your hand. The show begins at 9:30, Friday, Nov. 19; the cover is $5; and Holy Rolling Empire and Sleep Driver are on the bill with Dead Western Plains.
