CD8: Nathan Sproul Joining Team Paton?

Posted by Jim Nintzel on Thu, Aug 19, 2010 at 1:20 PM

Politico takes notice of the Sarah Palin flap in the CD8 Republican primary that we told you about a few days ago.

The story notes—as we did in coverage this week—that the race between former state lawmaker Jonathan Paton and political newcomer Jesse Kelly is coming down to the wire:

The Palin flap is the latest in an unexpectedly heated primary race that comes to a close next Tuesday. Paton, who jumped into the 8th District race after urging from national Republicans, raised more than $500,000 in his first three months, making the incumbent Giffords take notice. The Arizona Democratic Party started attacking him as “Payday Paton."

But in the second quarter, his fundraising dropped precipitously, to $167,000. Kelly outraised him in the pre-primary period between July 1 and Aug. 4, bringing in $78,500 to Paton’s $46,400.

Paton also spent much of his money early on, and Kelly has spent considerably more on TV ads in the past two weeks than Paton.

“Paton made some very serious mistakes about how he spent his money and where he spent his money. If it wasn’t for those mistakes, the race would have been over weeks ago, if not sooner,” said one longtime Arizona GOP operative.

The story also notes that notorious Republican operative Nathan Sproul, who has tight connections to auto dealer Jim Click, is coming to Paton's aid:

In the past 10 days, Paton has hired the Lincoln Strategy Group and has intensified efforts to woo top Republican financiers, a consultant said, a strategy that, according to FEC reports, has already yielded $26,700.

Scarpinato, the Paton spokesman, said the campaign is raising money at a rate on par with what they were raising between January and March.

Read the whole Politico piece here.

Scarpinato tells us the campaign has "not made any changes to our team," but declined to comment on whether campaign has hired Sproul as a vendor or consultant. Sproul, a former executive director of the Arizona Republican Party, made headlines in in 2008 after sending out a mailer linking state Sen. Russell Pearce, the architect of SB 1070, to Nazis.

This Final Bomb that Paton & His Campaign are throwing at Jesse Kelly with only 5 days left before August 24th wil end up being a Dud. Just like Paton. All Fizzle with NO BOOM!
Jesse Kelly is Running for Congress as a Conservative Republican. Jesse's Not trying to Wina Popularity Contest within the Republican Party Establishment. Jesse's More Interested in Fighting the Liberals with Free Market Solutions and Limiting Government's Intrusions into Our Daily Life. Jesse Kelly doesn't is an Independent Free Thinker Who Stands on is Conservative Principles & is Fearless. Jesse was Only disagreeing with Palin about a few things. Who says ALL Republicans have to Agree All of the time? When You Find Three that do. Let Me Know. Vote for Jesse Kelly Today if You haven't done so already.
This Hiring of Sproul has enraged Russell Pearce. Probably enough for Pearce to take back His Endorsement of Paton. We'll See. Please Vote for Jesse Kelly if You haven't done so already.

Jesse Kelly tends to put his foot in his mouth more often than not! It is obvious to many of us that with all that has gone on that he is NOT a candidate with high ethics, morals, integrity, intelligence, education and/or experience. I have to vote Paton ... don't want this man representing my views!

I voted for Jonathan Paton. I don't really like Jesse Kelly. I think that he's very unprofessional & needs to prove that he's actually a Republican before he gets elected as a Republican to Congress. I really liked Andy Goss, but he dropped out when his campaign could not raise the money that was required. But now, that I hear that the worst slime of all, Nathan Sproul, is working for Paton, it almost makes me regret my vote. Sproul is the spawn of Satan. What a terrible human being! I hope that it's not true. Jesse Kelly is a pretty horrible candidate, but how could anybody allow their own reputation to get in the mud with the likes of Nathan Sproul? I'm going to call Patan about this tomorrow. He is a better person than mixing with that lot.
