Feds Vs. AZ on SB 1070: Reax From Giffords, Kelly and Vogt

Posted by Jim Nintzel on Tue, Jul 6, 2010 at 2:50 PM

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:

I am disappointed with the federal lawsuit against SB 1070 for the same reason I was disappointed when this bill became law: Neither will do anything to make Arizona’s border communities more secure.

Both the law and the lawsuit challenging the law are unnecessary distractions. Arizonans want our nation to control its borders and bring a halt to the violence, smugglers and drugs that threaten our way of life.

To fully appreciate the seriousness of what Arizonans are up against, President Obama should come to the border. The president should spend an afternoon with the ranchers of Cochise County and the retirees of Green Valley so he can see for himself that what we need are Border Patrol agents on the border, not lawyers in court.

Federal lawyers arguing with state lawyers will do nothing to strengthen border security or to fix our broken immigration laws.

The supreme irony of the lawsuit is its premise that SB 1070 intrudes on the federal government’s responsibility to enforce immigration laws. Had the federal government taken that responsibility seriously in the past, neither today’s lawsuit nor the state law that prompted it would be necessary.

I am pleased that Attorney General Eric Holder has acknowledged Arizonans’ frustrations with illegal immigration. But addressing our concerns means the federal government must do its job and secure our border with Mexico.

Republican Congressional District 8 candidate Jesse Kelly:

It is a travesty that this administration has the gall to attack a state on the front lines of the border wars.

Gabrielle Giffords has betrayed her district in Washington and that is why the people of Southern Arizona will fire her in November.

State Rep. Ted Vogt:

I am very disappointed that the federal government has decided to sue our state rather than secure our borders.

The justice department’s resources would be much better spent going after drug smugglers and human traffickers.

To be part of the American Dream means to go through the immigration process legally. To eventually swear an oath of allegiance, to renounce allegiance to all foreign states or sovereignties.

Entering the country illegally.... waving the flag of the country you just left and claiming that the name of the country is Atzatln, that it was stolen from you and you're going to retake it does NOT in anyway endear you to the citizens of the United States.

People in Arizona are concerned enough that there are areas of the state posted as being dangerous for Arizona citizens to enter because of the danger imposed by drug smugglers and by "coyotes" transporting illegal aliens in to this country. There are Mexican drug cartels that are threatening to assassinate local law enforcement officers.

The process of defending the border IS the responsibility of the Federal Government. If the Obama administration will not defend the border that responsibility then falls onto the states. If those incursions by the drug cartels and by the Mexican military cannot be stopped we may see the actions of 1846-1848 or the actions of 1916-1917 repeat themselves. Let's hope things can be solved in a peaceful manner, I have no real desire to see Baja, Sonora, Chihuahua and the other Mexican border states become U.S. territories.

God Bless John J. Pershing
